¿Cómo será tu Cuaresma este año?FROM THE PASTORNext weekend we will begin the Season of Lent and it is time for each of us to begin thinking about how we will change our routine for the season. Each year the Church invites us to enter into the 40 days of Lent that link us to the other great 40’s in the Bible: In Genesis, the flood which destroyed the earth was brought about by 40 days and nights of rain, the Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God, Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the ten commandments on Mount Sinai, Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the wilderness in preparation for his ministry. For us these 40 days are about doing penance, about acknowledging the sins that we have committed in the previous year, and our need for conversion. The three traditional penitential practices of Lent are taken from Matthew Chapter 6, prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As Christians, we are called to pray every day. During Lent, we should add something to that daily prayer. The simplest way to do this is to pick a single prayer that we say each day as our act of penance. Second, is the most common part of Lent, fasting. Fasting is not about starving ourselves or risking our health. Fasting is about letting go, letting go of that which we do not truly need. Those from 18 to 60 are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (one full meal on those days). For others, we are invited to fast as your health will allow.Lastly, almsgiving. Here we have the example of the widow in the gospel who gave, not out of her surplus, but out of what she needed to live on. In our Lenten charity we are called to go beyond our ordinary charitable giving. Now is the time to make the plan. What will your Lent look like this year?Select an area to comment onCHRISTIAN FORMATION ***************************************************Interested in having your child baptized? We continue to celebrate infant baptisms regularly at St. Au-gustine’s with a few adaptations (none that altar the Sacrament of course). Please contact the parish office and speak to any of our administrative or Christian Formation staff for information.***************************************************Lent is Around the CornerThe season of Lent begins this Wednesday, February 17, Ash Wednesday and ends just before Mass begins on Holy Thurs-day. In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as catechumens (soon to be elect) enter a final period of learning, discernment, and prayer, prior to being fully initiated into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. As part of this season of preparation, the Church invites us to flex our spiritual muscles and embrace the penitential season through the practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As you and your family start thinking about the season and what specif-ic actions might help you grow in your life of discipleship, here are a few practical things to keep in mind: On Ash Wednesday, February 17, we will celebrate Mass with distribution of Ashes at 7:30am, and Liturgy of the Word services with distribution of Ashes (not Mass) at 12:15pm, 5:30pm, and 7:30pm, all bilingual. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for (most) Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence (from meat). The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person can eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms con-cerning abstinence from meat are binding upon Catholics age 14 onwards.Giving something up for Lent, or doing something for Lent, is voluntary, hence, you decide what to do and how you’ll go about doing it (eg. will you add a particular prayer or time of prayer once a week? Every day? Will you give up watching Youtube one, two days a week? Etc.). Another good penitential practice to incorporate in Lent is to go to Confession. This sacrament is still celebrated in person (no virtual option). Please check the parish schedule for dates and times. We will be offering an evening virtual Lenten series. Select an area to comment on****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************Ash Wednesday / Miércoles de CenizaFebruary / febrero 17, 20217:30am Mass with distribution of Ashes (Bilingual)12:15pm Liturgy of the Word with Ashes (Bilingual)5:30pm Liturgy of the Word with Ashes (Bilingual)7:30pm Liturgy of the Word with Ashes (Bilingual)**************************************************************************************************************************Stations of the Cross / Vía Crucis -7pm (Bilingual / Bilingüe) February / febrero 19March / marzo 5, 12, 19, 26TAKE OUT ONLY–Fridays during Lent: PARA LLEVAR SOLAMENTE–Cada viernes durante Cuaresma:February 19, March 5, March 12, March 19 & March 26thfrom 5:00pm –7:30pm in the Parish Hall 5:00pm -7:30pm en el Salón ParroquialOrder by calling (804) 584-1280 or place your order on-line at: St-Augustine-Church.square.siteOrdene llamando al (804) 584-1280o haga su pedido en línea en:St-Augustine-Church.square.siteMENU$10 –Whole Fish with rice, coleslaw & tortillaPescado Entero con arroz, ensalada de repollo y tortilla $10 –Baked fish with rice, coleslaw & hushpuppies Pescado al horno con arroz, ensalada de repollo y fritura de harina de maíz$10 –Fried Frish with french fries, coleslaw & hushpuppiesPescado frito con papas fritas, ensalada de repollo y fritura de harina de maíz$4 –Macaroni & CheeseMacarrones con quesoOFFICECOMMUNICATION COMUNICACIÓN DE LA OFICINAPlease note: Beginning the First weekend of Lent, (Feb. 20 & 21) our start times for mass in English will change:Saturdays at 5pmSundays at 9amTenga en cuenta: A partir del primer fin de semana de Cuaresma (20 y 21 de febrero), nuestros horarios de inicio de las misas en inglés cambiarán:sábados a las 5pmdomingos a las 9amSelect an area to comment onIN OTHER NEWS...For prayerful preparation during the week before Sunday Mass, visit liturgy.slu.edu.
